Popularity of the Gita

Category: Articles — at 5:29 pm on Thursday, February 16, 2006

The Bhagavad Gita is an important scriptural authority for the three schools of Vedanta— Advaita, Visishtadvaita and Dvaita. Hence the commentaries on it are profuse. What is the reason for its importance and popularity? Sankara’s choice of commenting on the three independent treatises — the Sanatsujatiya, Bhagavad Gita and the Vishnu Sahasranama — occurring in the Mahabharata perhaps can offer a clue. All the three works teach the nature of the Reality but they were taught to people of different calibre and tendencies (Guna).

Sage Sanatsujata taught the work, which has come to be known after him, to Dhritarashtra who never heeded the counsel of those who meant well. Such a person has a preponderance of Tamoguna. Lord Krishna expounded the Gita to Arjuna in whom Rajoguna was dominant, while Bhishma taught the Vishnu Sahasranama to Yudhishthira, who was Sattvic in nature. As the objective of composing new texts is dissemination of the truth to cater to different types of spiritual aspirants, it is of no avail if the seeker is not inclined to benefit from the teaching as in the case of the Tamoguna type. A work meant for a spiritual aspirant who is Sattvic, as in the case of Yudhishthira, also does not require constant elucidation as the person himself will be equipped enough to benefit from it; besides such seekers are in the minority. The majority of people were the middling, predominantly Rajoguna type, who could identify with Arjuna easily and hence the Bhagavad Gita’s relevance and popularity, said Sri K.Srinivasan in his discourse.

The Lord’s teaching began when Arjuna’s surrendered to Him saying, “Tell me which is decidedly good. I am Your disciple. Pray instruct me who have put myself in Your hands.” He concluded His teaching with the words, “This wisdom, more secret than secrecy itself has been imparted to you by Me. Fully pondering on it, do as you like.” Why should teaching of the truth be kept a secret? Tradition avers that the knowledge of one’s disease, wealth and spiritual initiation concern one’s well-being and sharing them with others might result in exploitation by them. Another reason is due to the human nature of blowing one’s trumpet when one is privy to something exclusive and thus ego will retard spiritual progress.

Their relationship consisted

In discussing if it existed

— Thom Gunn

Spiritual awareness is a balance between our rational and intuitive selves. In his book The Celestial Vision (Bantam Books) James Redfield says so, categorically. Awareness comes to us via the truth of other human beings. The process of interacting with others helps us focus on the best in self and there is simultaneous reciprocity.

The process is a matter of intent. The universe responds to this and as our thoughts and beliefs go out into the world like prayers, the environment gives us what we seem to want. The key is to keep our energy high and use the power of intention in a positive way. The systematic increase in everyone’s energy leads to higher potential of the group.

As groups meet and people begin to speak, members who intentionally focus on the highest level of energy expression know that they are intentionally sending love and energy to uplift each other. Energy shifts naturally from one person to another and as this happens most members of the group experience a rise in adrenalin. There is a rush of inspiration and ideas flow out.

Complexity of individual interiority is mirrored and fulfilled in the discovery and activity of group work. Our feelings towards each other without doubt reflect our feelings towards ourselves. When we allow people into our lives and allow ourselves to experience energy, we begin to inhabit more and more the kingdom of the eternal. Fear changes into courage, emptiness becomes plenitude and distance becomes intimacy.

Yet there are times when all relationships travel through the black valley of despair. This tests every aspect of the relationship. Attraction is lost and so is the magic. Sense of each other darkens and there is soreness felt. Sometimes as relationships turn and group members fix on each other’s points of mutual negativity, when they meet only at a point of poverty between each other, it gives birth to a ghost, which devours every shred of affection. Persons become helpless and repetitive. Vigilance is needed at such points as is care in order to redirect the conversation. When the group recognises possibilities it is a gift and the group remains open to blessings. Protective distances collapse.

However, sometimes energies get blocked; this happens when there is grandstanding, blocking and acquiescing

Grandstanding

This occurs when a member who is speaking keeps the floor longer than is appropriate. It usually occurs in the following manner: The group is flowing nicely. Each member carries the intention to send as much energy to everyone else possible. Then, as the energy naturally begins to shift to someone else, the speaker fails to notice and continues with his own ideas, thinking of other things to say in spite of the group’s decreasing attention.

The other members have the perception that the group is now out of its best flow and usually become restless. In extreme cases, the group might degenerate into a battle of egos as the confusion leads several members to vie for the floor, each thinking that he or she has something better to say.

The key to overcoming grandstanding is immediate recognition. If everyone sees what is occurring the problem can be averted with as little disruption to the group as possible. The ideal solution, of course, is for the speaker to see what is taking place and stop himself. If that doesn’t happen, the person who felt the energy move to him or her could intervene diplomatically by saying something such as, “Can we return to the point you made earlier? I’d like to comment.” If the current speaker doesn’t allow this, other members can intervene as well, moving the energy finally to the correct person.

Blocking

Another problem that often disrupts a group is blocking. As the group moves forward, one member interrupts, taking exception to what the speaker is saying. Sometimes speakers will disagree naturally as a result of the true energy flow, in which case others will shift their attention to the new speaker’s point. However, blocking occurs when a member speaks even though the energy has not shifted, and the general feeling on the part of the group is that the blocker has interrupted.

Another sign of this problem is that when other group members speak in support of the first speaker, the blocker continues to argue, often repeating himself. Usually, a person who blocks once continues to interrupt over and over, creating a regular pattern of bids for attention. Blocking is a very serious problem in a group because it can effectively thwart all movement forward.

Like the grandstander, the blocker must be confronted diplomatically. If the blocking is general, anyone can intervene. But if the blocking is focused on a particular individual, the person targeted may be in the best position to confront the blocker, at least at first.

Acquiescing

Another problem that can befall a group occurs when the energy of the group moves to a particular member who fails to take his turn to speak. Once again, this would feel like a letdown of energy, a lull in the flow. The group might have been engaged in a perfect conversation, over a long period of time, when as usual, the energy of the current speaker begins to wane and shift to someone else — only the new person is silent. The members look at one another in confusion, or perhaps someone actually picks up on the person who should be speaking and looks his way, but still nothing happens. The person remains quiet.

When this occurs, it prevents the group from being as effective as it could be. The contribution of every member at the right time is critical to the overall flow of truth. Often the eventual outcome, in terms of productivity, can be severely limited by just one person who acquiesces. The basis of this problem, of course, lies in the person’s self-confidence and trust level with the other members of the group. Sometimes the acquiescence can be prevented or kept to a minimum just by making sure the members are comfortable with each other, or by merely slowing the group process down.

We’ve all been the grandstander, blocker, or acquiescent at one time or another. But, by being conscious of the pitfalls in the group dynamics, we can learn to avoid them. Any glitch in this area can be overcome if the members stay alert and openly discuss the difficulties they perceive.

The scope of interpersonal spiritual awareness is large. When we reach a level of awareness in which we know that most of our consciousness arrives through other people, we begin to use the energy dynamics we’ve learned to uplift all the people in our lives.

The more love and energy we give, the more rapidly awareness messages come to us, and the more creative, effective, and inspiring will be our individual lives.

THE CIRCLE OF HEALING

Category: Articles — at 10:43 am on Monday, February 13, 2006

Cathy Holt
OUR true home is among the stars and trees, with crickets and frogs singing us to sleep at night, and birdsong to awaken us along with dawn light. We cannot be healthy without spending time outdoors, since nature is our true source of healing energy. Healing requires an improvement in our energy flow. Health is coming into proper balance with Earth energies.
Some adults spend their vacations and weekends shopping or visiting museums. But the fresh air of the mountains and of the ocean is healing. Lie on warm sand and soak up the solar energy into all parts of your body, any parts that hurt. Or lie on leaves or pine needles and feel the support of the ground under your back. We can release unhealthy energy into the Earth, as well as receive the Earth’s healing energy this way. By paying close attention to any natural entity, such as a tree, a stream, or a flower, we generate a resonance between ourselves and that healthy natural being.
As we resonate, our energies become aligned; and our health is improved… Trees are masters of tapping Earth’s energy and letting it flow up through them. By attending to and appreciating these qualities, we can begin to share them. Go quietly outdoors at sunset or dawn, preferably alone, and contemplate your surroundings. Spend time with the moon, especially if you are female or want to balance your feminine and masculine qualities.

Instruction by practice

Category: Articles — at 1:48 pm on Saturday, February 11, 2006

The Karma Yoga propounded by Lord Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita places tremendous emphasis on the performance of one’s ordained duties while also urging the individual to renounce any claim on the fruits of actions performed.

The Lord draws attention to His own example when He states that He continues to work for the upkeep of the universe, though He is not bound by any kind of duty. There is nothing in all the three worlds that He does not possess, and nothing that He has yet to acquire.

Sri B. Sundarkumar pointed out in a lecture that in His incarnation as Lord Krishna there are many occasions wherein His actions highlight the practical and spiritual significance of principled living, while also offering an inspirational role model for emulation.

The Lord is the greatest preceptor who is not content with mere instruction of truths, but lives them out in His incarnations, to make his teaching effective. During the conduct of the Rajasuya yaga in the Mahabharata, Lord Krishna Himself assisted Yudhishtira by undertaking the responsibility of receiving the guests and scholars with due respect and reverence. This act revealed His unassuming nature and His Saulabhya (accessibility).

He, who is the sole refuge of all, had served the revered guests in all humility, indicating to mankind the importance of upholding this gracious and customary tradition of honouring guests.

Towards the end of the sacrifice, when the time came for paying obeisance to the most pre-eminent person in the assemblage of saints and savants, the Pandava brothers decided on the advice of Bhisma that Lord Krishna was the most eligible to receive the honour. Even the celestials joined in the worship of the Supreme Being.

It was then that Sisupala, the Chedi king and a cousin of Lord Krishna, who had nurtured animosity towards the Lord, hurled abusive language that turned out to be Ninda Stuti (censure turned praise) if one were to read between the lines.

The manner of Sisupala’s end was a moment of great significance. The Lord severed his head with his discus and took him within Himself, marking the culmination of the curse incurred by the celestial gatekeeper Jaya, after three consecutive births.

Live the truth to live out your desires

Category: Articles — at 7:42 pm on Thursday, February 9, 2006

PARAMAHAMSA SRI NITHYANANDA

Patanjali, in his Yoga Sutras, talks about an eight-fold path to achieve Yoga, union of the Self and the Divine. Satya is one path. He says live your life truthfully.

Satya is just not truth of the words we utter. That’s only one dimension. Thinking the truth and living the truth are the other two dimensions. Vedanta says that you create what you want; you are the creator of the whole world. It is you, who create suffering and bliss. We may ask: if we are the creator of the world, why would we create suffering? The reason is that either consciously or unconsciously we are not being true to our Being; we are not living, acting, or speaking the truth.

Continuously we create self-contradicting desires. At a deep level, whether we accept it or not, believe it or not, understand it or not, we are God. Therefore, we create trouble when we contradict ourselves and give power to self-contradicting thoughts.

When you think of wanting to get rid of a disease, when you say to yourselves that you must not have this pain, you are already meditating upon that disease. Instead if you say, let me be healthy, and if you bring the concept of health to your mind and being, the ache and pain will disappear. Self-contradicting thoughts such as trying to get rid of pain by thinking of pain are called samskaras and these get power and become real.

These samskaras suck your energy and make you powerless. The word you repeat within yourself should be true. You give power to disease by just saying disease. Being truthful is something more than being factual. First you need to straighten your inner chatter.

Try and spend half an hour a day to straighten your thinking, the same way as you spend in straightening your body and dress. Spend time in straightening out your samskaras.

Satya is what gives peace and bliss to all. You cannot speak arrogantly; arrogance creates anger, disturbance, and violence. If you say people are disturbed when you speak the truth, the truth that you express is your ego and arrogance, not the truth.

You can always express truth politely, acceptably without hurting someone; only then is it truth. Pure truth can never be violent, can never hurt someone. It makes your dreams come true.

INSPIRING WELLNESS

Category: Articles — at 7:53 pm on Tuesday, February 7, 2006

Anna Coy

BREATH work is any type of breathing practice that leads you to inner peace, expands your awareness and helps you create connection with your body. Taking time for yourself to simply breathe can work wonders and bring instantaneous changes to your physical and emotional wellbeing. Imagine for a moment you feel energetic all day, your body is healthy, your mind is clear and your intuition is strong. You are true to yourself, unafraid to really live, you are empowered and you manage your emotions and stress level. How much could you accomplish? What if it was as easy as changing how you breathe?
Your breathing habits determine how much energy and vitality you have and directly influence your body’s ability to heal. Taking a deep breath once in a while may not be enough, as each individual differs in what they believe is a deep full breath. Many people are used to getting small volumes of air and their deep breath may fall short of what they are really capable of taking in. During our lifetime we gasp, hold our breath, sigh, yawn, go into hyperventilation and simply stop breathing. In this relationship with breath, we actually form habitual responses to situations and eventually these habits are the norm. Through breath work you can find information within which will inspire you to become more self-motivated and encouraged to live the life you know you deserve.
